On September 5, 1911, a long struggle for control of Seattle’s central waterfront ended with king county voters’ approval to establish the Port of Seattle, a special-purpose government to manage properties for the prosperity of the local citizens and the region. The move ended the long-term domination that railroads and private interests held over Seattle’s harbor.
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, or Sea-Tac, as it commonly is called, was developed following the attack on pearl Habor in 1941, when military needs limited civilian access to existing airports such as Boeing Field. The Port of Seattle built a new regional airport on a tract of land midway between Seattle and Tacoma. Full civilian operation of the airport began in 1949.
